10 Best International Places to Retire

An interesting article concerning the best places to retire. In any such list, the most important issue to understand is the criteria for the selection. In this case the author was up front and clear:

Call us conventional, but we like: stable governments; low crime rates; the ability to mix with ordinary people; great food, wine, and culture; and 1st world dependability and bureaucracies.

This sounds very reasonable and logical. Not necessarily all the things I would be concerned about, but a lot more useful than what most of the travel magazines offer. I really don’t care where the denizens of Hollyweird hang out when they are not making their ghastly fair of sex and violence.

Author’s picks in order of preference:

Ireland, France, the Southern Coast of Spain, the Italian Coast around Lucca, Costa Rica, Croatia, New Zealand, Panama, Mexico, and Ecuador

WHAT WOULD YOUR CHOICE BE? AND WHY?

About fafc

The goal of the “Find a Free Country Project” is to research, explore and find a safe and secure free country outside the USA, that is not too large, has a relatively open immigration policy, has a friendly business climate, has a non-intrusive government committed to freedom, and then move to it.

    Belize? What do you think?

About 12 years ago I moved to Belize and I loved it. My then wife did not. So I returned to the US. I have regrets about leaving Belize, but I know I did the right thing, even though the marriage did not work out. I would return to Belize in a heart-beat. I visited Belize last summer and spent a week on Ambergris. The whole country has really changed, some for the good, some not so good. But if you are careful and cautious it is still much better than here.

If I were an American, I would avoid Croatia, because there is no treaty on avoiding double taxation between the USA and Croatia, so in addition to whatever amount of your pension income you may have to pay to the IRS, you would also have to pay up to 40% to the Croatian equivalent of the IRS, either way it’s highway robbery.

As for which of the ten countries I would choose, my answer is none of them, the Latin American ones have serious problems with street crime, corruption, etc., while all of the Western ones apart from Croatia have “multiculturalism” as either de facto or de jure state policy, while Croatia is ru(i)n(ed) by socialist morons who don’t even let the pensioners alone to enjoy their retirement.

I think Montenegro has some real advantages for the retiree looking to live the high life on a budget. Also, Mexico is nice if you are careful about where you go. The violence is limited to certain parts of the country and is horrendous, but the rest of the country is peaceful. And of course Georgia.

  3. Croatian Capitalist says:

Yes, Montenegro would be a better choice, it has a much better tax system than Croatia, the prices of most things are generally lower, and my impression was that they are nicer to foreigners on average than the coastal people here are.

As for Mexico, I am sure there are still “nice” places there, but many places that were “nice” until relatively recently, when the narco-cartel scum moved in, so I would base my retirement plans on the assumption that those places will be left alone by the cartels.

As for Georgia, have you visited Batumi? It would seem like the best place to retire in Georgia.

  4. Croatian Capitalist says:

Not much to do with retirement there as such, but it does show that leftist idiots are in charge of New Zealand: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12030723

Spain is suffering from the neo-liberal fantasy that they can import the future from the barbaric past. What you end up with is chaos. On the positive side one of the great goals of Islam may very well be achieved without a shot being fired: the reversal of the Reconquista and the return of Spain to Islam.

      • Croatian Capitalist says:

Ironically, looking at how pathetic the modern Spanish are, it would have probably been better if their ancestors never launched the reconquista, the Caliphate of Cordoba was one of the centers of civilization back then, while these third world invaders will turn Spain into a third world cesspool if they aren’t stopped, another ironic/funny thing is that if the Caliphate of Cordoba had survived into the present, they would almost certainly have absolutely no qualms about shooting the third world invaders.
