Well, it depends on what somebody’s definition of the word “freedom” is, according to my definition it isn’t, because even ignoring all of the other anti-freedom things being done in the USA, just the fact that there are literally over a million Federal regulations in place in the USA makes the country not free.
That is the issue. I wrote this little essay thinking about that very issue. https://scriggler.com/DetailPost/Opinion/28959
You are right, it’s not just the issue of governmental stupidity, but also that the view of the average Westerner (and this probably applies more to Americans than the rest of the West) of what freedom is has degenerated quite a lot over the last 100 years or so.
I actually think the Western European is much worse. The only Americans you guys see are the Leftists who come to Europe to discover themselves! and to screw with people. Most Americans are much more conservative than the average European. It is frankly the only hope for America, but not one I am very confident in. Yes, the American is more conservative than the European, but just as lazy and indolent.
What I meant was that since Americans were way more pro-freedom than Western Europeans (apart from maybe the British and the Swiss) to start with 100+ years ago, your decline has been greater (even if you are still better off than them).
As for Americans being more conservative on average than Western Europeans, outside of the major cities that is probably true, but when you compare the major cities cities in the USA (Washington, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, etc.) with the major cities in Western Europe (London, Berlin, Milan, Barcelona, Munich, Rome, Madrid, etc.), I don’t really see the major American cities being any better, actually I think that they are even worse on average.
I would tend to agree with you with one caveat: most Europeans only get news about the USA from the US mainstream media, and the European equivalents. As a result you get an even more biased and leftist treatment than most Americans get. For instance, a lot of lies were told about Donald Trump in the US mainstream media, but they were countered by other more reliable sources in the USA. In Europe only the lies were reported. The lack of any real alternative news in Europe is a real problem.
In general that is true, in most of Europe media freedom is at a very low level, which isn’t at all surprising considering the Orwellian “hate speech” laws in place in most of the EU.
