The Lesson of Lot’s Wife — Hint: Its not about sex

I thought I would write today about Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s family, and the sad end that came to Lot’s wife. Now you may aks, what does Sodom and Gomorrah have to do with Finding a Free Country? Hopefully it will soon become apparent.

I heard about how Firefighters’ Suit Tossed Out After Being Forced To Participate In Gay Parade, just one of many such cases, and I thought about Sodom and Gomorrah.

It is my opinion that people have a tendency to over simplify Biblical stories, and miss the real message. As such the story of Sodom and Gomorrah becomes all about perverted sex. More evidence that the Bible was written by sexually uptight repressive guys looking to force their puritanical views on others, right?

But that is not the entire picture in my opinion. I don’t think that Middle Eastern nomads living 3000 years ago would have been any more interested in intruding into people’s bedrooms (or tents) than people are today. And I really doubt such people would have been all that shocked by odd acts of homosexuality now and then. Yes, the story is about homosexuality and perversion, but it is also about lawless violence, homosexual gang rape, robbery, and corruption of the law. If we are to believe the Bible the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were not just into kinky gay sex, but they were greedy, envious, lying thieves who thought nothing of violating visitors and guests in the most violent, vile, and dishonest of ways, and then hiding behind their corrupt legal system to justify it all.

Now there is a lot of debate among religious people about exactly why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Was it because they were sexually perverted? Or was it because the entire populations seems to have been taken over by violent lawless criminals who preyed upon guests and visitors in the most horrible of ways; robbing, raping, killing, etc. Does it really matter?

One thing is clear: Sodom and Gomorrah was wholly given up to immorality and evil. They cared nothing about whether what they did was right or wrong, only about whether or not they could get away with it. Their violent sexual perversity was simply the most visible and shocking aspects of a people who had wholly abandoned the concept of morality as a legitimate guide to individual and group behavior.

Ok. So why should anyone care, and what’s the deal with Lot’s wife? According to the Bible story two angels came to Lot to save him and his family from the destruction that was to come. Lot tried to defend Sodom and Gomorrah, but he was unable to prove that the two towns didn’t deserve to be destroyed. The angels eventually led Lot and his family away to safety. Lot’s future son-in-law refused to leave and was destroyed. The angels instructed Lot and his family to leave and never look back. But Lot’s wife had to look back. One can only guess what she was thinking about: was it her comfortable home filled with all the creature comforts available to people 3000 years ago; posh furniture, bronze age kitchen appliances, etc., or was it her stylish neighbors, sophisticated entertainment, chic stores, etc. Whatever the case, she looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.

I look around at what is happening in the USA and Western Europe, and Sodom and Gomorrah comes to mind. Not quite so violent or obvious, but the Biblical story was a morality tale. One should expect extremes. The Western World has abandoned its core ideology based upon morality derived from religion. What is left is desire. Today the greatest evil in our modern world is no longer violence and corruption created by immorality, but being judgmental. Being judgmental is the worst crime in our world. Somehow I suspect that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were not big fans of being judgmental either.

Conservatives have choices to make. Do we stay in Sodom and Gomorrah and turn a blind eye to the evil and corruption that is all around us while enjoying our luxuries and advanced way of life (and perhaps suffer the fate of Lot’s Wife — to be consumed by that corruption), or do we turn our back on the corruption enveloping us and choose a better way of life?

About fafc

The goal of the “Find a Free Country Project” is to research, explore and find a safe and secure free country outside the USA, that is not too large, has a relatively open immigration policy, has a friendly business climate, has a non-intrusive government committed to freedom, and then move to it.

I really don’t know what I would do if I was an American (my family almost did move to the USA in the 1980’s), but I guess the choices would be pretty straightforward; A) Move back to Europe. B) Stay in the USA and move to whichever place I would consider the best (in this case it would mean economically viable and as isolated from the negative things happening in the USA as possible) in the USA, without becoming involved in politics, and letting everything play itself out. C) Find the place most to my liking in the USA and get politically involved there and try to help change the direction the USA is heading in.

Even though I would probably in the end chose option A), unlike the other countries founded by Europeans outside of Europe (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, etc.), the United States of America are a very specific country, not just because free speech and the right to keep and bear arms are constitutional rights, but also because it is the World’s strongest economic, military, cultural, scientific, educational, etc. power and it’s the only one of those countries with an nuclear weapons arsenal (and a very large one at that), so leaving all of those things that (for the most part) “conservative” Europeans have built over the centuries in America to the “liberals” and third World immigrants seems to me to be a (very) bad idea, so deciding to leave definitely wouldn’t be an easy decision to make, and mass-abandonment of the country by the only people keeping it together is not really something I would support, since it would have serious consequences outside of the borders of the United States of America.

I just read that Florida has buckled as well, with no serious opposition to speak of, it seems that some people just don’t want to learn from history.

Supreme Court to decide if states can ban gay marriage: http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/16/us-usa-court-gaymarriage-idUSKBN0KP2B920150116

I expect that they will rule against the states that want it to stay banned.

Rather sad really. I am not anti-gay, but I am against gay marriage. To create “Constitutional” rights out of nothing confirms to me that our Constitution is dead and it is only brought out now and then like some great stuffed beast to be gawked at.

  4. Croatian Capitalist says:

Yes, if gay “marriage” was an constitutional right, then it would have been legal from the enactment of United States Constitution in 1789., but it was neither legal nor practiced, so these judges are acting based purely on their personal world-view, and not the Constitution of the United States of America.

    • fafc says:

Agreed. In my opinion there simply is no Constitutional right to marry anyone. It is entirely based upon what the laws of the State are, and those laws are determined by the legal system, in this case a democratic republic. The USA was founded on the basis that the Federal government only has/had the powers granted to it by the Constitution, with all other powers remaining in the States, the issue of marriage should be defined by each State, not by the Federal government. Just as I am against the Federal government (whether it be the Judiciary, Legislative, or Executive) granting the right of gay marriage, I am also against the Federal government denying the right. In short, I don’t believe the Federal government has any jurisdiction to make that decision. It should be left to the States to decide in whatever manner their various systems operate.

But clearly, even if you believe there is some sort of “natural” right to marriage that is part of the Constitution (that is: no State government could deny you the right of heterosexual marriage as defined by the Bible), there is absolutely no evidence that there was ever a “natural” right for same sex marriage. There is an argument of “equal protection” guaranteed by the 14th amendment that gays should not be denied the right to marriage, but that could simply be countered that gays are not denied the right to marriage as defined by the law, they can marry a qualified adult member of the opposite sex just like any other person. As such they are not be discriminated against by denying them the right to marry the same sex partner.

But none of this really matters anymore. No one pays any attention to anything in the Constitution that was intended to limit the power of the Federal Government (particularly not judges), or honor the fundamental concept that people should be allowed to govern themselves in these matters at the local level. So if gay marriage is popular today it will be enacted regardless of legal arguments to the contrary.

This is why I would never move to America, even if there was no illegal-immigrant invasion and all of these other bad things happening, I still wouldn’t want to live in country where the government and courts opens violate/circumvent their own Constitution.

    • fafc says:

Agreed. Partly why I am leaving. But everyone tells me, “if it is so bad why does everyone want to come here!” My only response is that the only people coming today are socialist leaches, with obvious exceptions.

“Openly”, not “opens” in the above post.

  7. Croatian Capitalist says:

The vast majority of immigrants to the USA today come from third World socialist countries (with Mexico being by far the largest source), and that is hardly something to be proud of, very few people in comparison come to the USA from first World countries anymore (for example, the population of Haiti is around 10 million, while the population of Germany is around 81 million, nonetheless between 1986 and 2012 the USA accepted 536,657 immigrants from Haiti, but only 192,676 immigrants from Germany) while in the past the vast majority of immigrants were from first World countries (such as the UK and Germany for example).

Some Western countries such as Canada and Sweden are becoming worse than Sodom and Gomorrah, even visiting them as a tourist is out of the question now for me.

It really seems to be a race to the bottom for many Western countries.
